Subject: HPPA – Toward Excellence in Governance

Dear Paul,

Firstly, our best wishes to you, your family and Trustee colleagues for 2022. Let’s hope it is a better year for everyone!

You should have received the “paper” we  recentlysent to Marc Waters entitled “HPE – Ethics is Everyone’s Business”.  We hope you found this to be a valuable contribution and provides further opportunity for productive dialogue with both Marc Waters and other executives.

As part of our continuing campaign we are now also submitting a similar styled “paper” for yourself and Trustees, entitled: “Towards Excellence in Governance”. As always, our aim is to provide useful and meaningful contribution on all aspects we consider critical to finding breakthrough.

We believe we have reached a tipping point – and there is a need for the Trustees to further “elevate their game” in finding ways to increase their influence with company executives.

Our paper reflects on the historical context and why we believe creating strong influence is a fundamental aspect of your purpose. We suggest a possible way towards creating greater influence through new tactics, effective change management practices, targeted interventions that focus on all perceived “blockages” wherever these exist within the company and high advocacy.

We remain convinced that a solution can be found and that changing the nature, style and methods of engagement with the company are key factors. Having a Trustee “champion” and a company “champion” working “from within” is one change management intervention suggested in our paper.

We believe you are also a critical linchpin in finding breakthrough and, as Chair, can play an influential role in how the Board and appropriate advisors can enable the necessary changes.

We hope that our paper contributes to finding new ways of influencing company executives and overcoming the negative outcomes of the past thirteen years.

We would of course appreciate any feedback on the efficacy of both our “papers”.

We look forward to your response and meeting again in person in the near future to gain better insight into Trustee and company negotiations for 2022 increases as well as the longer-term systemic change required.

Kind Regards,

Alan Evans and the HPPA team
