 Hello Paul,

Thank you for your response to our request for re-establishing dialogue.

The team look forward to a future meeting although not all members will be available in late May, perhaps mid June would be a better option.

We fully understand that the company has sole decision power on granting discretionary increases and we also understand the perspective and position being taken by the Trustee towards their remit and fiduciary duty.

We agree that a joint submission to the company is not appropriate and we are not asking for this.

We are sure you will appreciate how important it is for us to have total confidence that the Trustee are actively adopting new tactics and best practices in fulfilling their fiduciary duty to members. We are highly dependent on the Trustee finding creative breakthrough. We also believe that the Trustee has significant flexibility in the way in which their fiduciary remit can be approached and fulfilled and we believe adopting new behaviours, tactics and practices are a key element in becoming more effective at this than in the past.

We are therefore highly encouraged to see that you are engaging earlier this year with the company as this is clear evidence to us of new behaviours and tactics that have the potential to bring about much needed change.

In your email you ask a few things of us, including:

  • To not send previous presentations again
  • To provide you with any additional pensioner experience
  • To provide any new information we think relevant to put to the company – for the Trustee  to consider
  • And for any proposed “solutions” around the governance of discretionary decisions you also suggest that we contact the company in this regard

In response to the above we have a submission attached for the Trustee to consider.

We also consider this representation to be equally suitable for sharing directly with the company at an appropriate time and you will see that it is intended for both the Trustee and company executives.

We would appreciate your reaction and feedback on this please as this will determine how we approach the company, any advice on how we can engage with HPE would be welcome. We can discuss the presentation in detail when we meet.

We look forward to hearing from you with some possible dates for a meeting.

Kind Regards,

Alan and the HPPA Team
